Past: Melissa was born in Portland to an aspiring model and a marine biologist. They moved to L.A. when she was in middle school so her mother could pursue her modeling career. Missy's mother, Robin, was picked up for music videos and soon was appearing in rock videos. Robin fell in love with the vibe of the video industry and Missy fell in love with the guitar while sitting on the sets watching her mother.
Missy started lessons and started looking for a band at 16. At 17 she started playing in small local bands, even tried to start an all female rock band which is when she met a young, female punk bassist. On the side, Missy picked up modeling to make ends meet. Dee and Missy became casual friends but never played together until a couple years later when Missy met Devon and they needed a bassist. As Hexed was starting up Missy ran into a newly arrived, wild, redhaired British guitarist and fell madly in love with him. Rekker's chaos almost cost Missy her place in Hexed as she spiraled into drug and alcohol use. It took nearly six months for her to realize that her new boyfriend needed serious help.
Missy and Dee got Rekker into an outpatient program for addiction and mental health. Things evened out and were good as Hexed released their first album. In high spirits the band nearly fell apart when their guitarist Rich died in a car crash. Missy found comfort with her boyfriend who knew far more about depression than anyone else. Rekker kept Missy from falling into the worst habits as she grieved. When they started looking for a new guitarist and singer, Missy brought her boyfriend in and things clicked; two couples as a metal band.
Things went well and Missy and Rekker dated for 4 years until the pressure of his perfectionism and mental health strained their relationship, especially after Rekker attempted to commit suicide. It was either their relationship or the band. Both agreed the band was more important and they separated on good terms though they remained close. Missy was soon dating guitarist from another band and things went well. Missy got married two years later and had two daughters. The marriage seemed good on the outside. Rekker and Dee both pitched in to help with the children when band practice or other obligations called.
Rekker moved on to date other people and things were going well but Missy was hiding that her husband was abusive. One night Rekker and Devon were bringing her daughters home and walked in on a fight. Her husband had hit her and was throwing things at her when they walked into the house. Rekker dragged her husband outside and threw him off the deck, breaking his arm in the process. There was a fairly large court battle but Missy ended up getting sole custody of her children, the thing most important to Missy and her bandmates who stood by her the entire time.
Missy was devastated and she sat down with her band, throwing herself into song writing to deal with the pain. After healing she started to date again and had a third child, a son, but his father wasn't interested in sticking around. Dee moved in to help her out and her band supported her mentally and emotionally while she fumbled her way through learning to be a successful musician and the single mother of three.
She's a survivor and now that Hexed is separated she manages and promotes other starting bands in L.A. while continuing to raise her children. She's still close to the others and often checks in on both Rekker and Dee, the youngest of the band, like a mother hen.
